Mexico Life is not just for expats, although anyone who lives here even briefly may appreciate it the most. Maybe you’re like my sister who dreams of living in Mexico. Or like many of my subscribers who have Hispanic friends and appreciate the cultural and language tips in this blog.
How did I end up in Mexico? Love! As they say here, “como jalan las mujeres,” the pull of a woman. I was a high school math teacher in Tucson, Arizona, when I met my future wife Mireya who was studying English there. So, she was learning English and I thought jalapeño was pronounced wala-PEEN-o. Communication was oh-so-onerous in the beginning, but we have now been married for 37 years!
Over thirty of those have been spent living and learning in Morelia, Mexico. We have hosted many American and Canadian visitors and prepared high school-aged Mexicans for one-month homestays in the USA. We know the cultural and language obstacles facing anyone who wants to encajar or “fit in” to Mexico.
